The SCS Elmwood Campus experienced a spring-semester
growth burst of new computing technology. Fifty-three Dell Optiplex
755 computers were purchased in April to upgrade two PC labs at
the Elmwood Campus and one PC lab at the Mississippi Gulf Coast
Campus. Installed in time for the 2008 summer semester, the computers
boast impressive stats:
Processor Type
= Intel(R) Core2 Duo CPU
Processor Clock Speed = 2.66 GHz
Installed Memory = 2.0 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Memory Speed = 667 MHz
Dr. Jim Simmons, Director for the Applied Computing Systems and Technology
Program, emphasized SCS's continuing efforts to assure that up-to-date
desktop technology is in the computer labs.
“We make incremental improvements throughout
the year in both software and hardware. However, state-of-the-art
computers are the currency for academic computing,” said Simmons.
“The life-span for computers is growing shorter all the time.
One Elmwood lab was upgraded in the summer of 2007. Upgrading three
additional labs in time for the 2008 summer semester was an important
goal we set for ourselves.”
“The computers also are Vista ready,”
added Simmons. “This positions us to move into Vista when
the time comes. Overall, the new Dells have more computing muscle,
are faster and more adaptable to our current needs, as well as those
we anticipate for the foreseeable future. Our faculty is delighted
with the progress. Once classes begin, I know that our students
will be, too.”
