21. Jambalaya Program Records
1975-1980

The Jambalaya Program was a series of lectures, discussion, exhibits and other activities examining the culture of New Orleans. From 1977 through 1980, 194 events featuring 284 speakers, panelists, and performers within a framework of twenty-seven individual series were presented. Female participants and/or correspondents include Joan Martin, Lillian Hellman, and Shirley Ann Grau. Topics explored in the Jambalaya series included the New Orleans Mardi Gras, urban setting, economy, literary scene, film-making, radio and television, music, children's books, politics, the melting pot, New Deal art, journalism, the Mississippi River, cuisine, environment, medicine, education, and future. The City Archives houses the correspondence, minutes, financial records, sound recordings, posters, and other records of the program.

Manuscript autobiography recounting the author's early years in France, her voyage to New York and subsequent journey by train to Jackson, Mississippi in 1891, and her married life in New Orleans. Included are descriptions of the Insane Asylum in Jackson (where her father was employed) and of the dairy business in the Carrollton section of New Orleans.

Two scrapbooks gifted by Mrs. W. L. Linfield. Volume 1 deals with historical events, places, and persons, including material on political corruption. Volume 2 includes newspaper clippings dealing mostly with the disclosure and prospectus of political corruption in the aftermath of Huey Long. Some articles deal with historic buildings and localities.


29. Local Council of Women in New Orleans

The Local Council was formed in 1898, was comprised of representatives of all New Orleans women's groups, and created a forum of concerned and active women citizens who could further organize their interests to better their community and their conditions. This is an important archive, which evinces the wide involvement of local women's organizations in the community. Records included are lists of members, officers, and member organizations; the charter and bylaws; minutes of the Local Council and the committee on sanitation; correspondence; and clippings. Sophie B. Wright was president of the Local Council.
