Repository Information: Tulane University Archives preserves the official records of and information about Tulane University. The archives hold over 3,600 linear feet of materials--primarily documents, but also over 11,000 slides, and 55,000 photographic negatives. There are restrictions on using top administrative personnel and student records, but most of our other documents are available for research. The most important record groups contain correspondence and office files of the Board of Administrators (since 1845) and Presidents William Preston Johnston (1884-1899) through Eamon Michael Kelly (1980-1998), deans, and other administrators. Records include personnel files, student records and card files on graduates (1834-1978), photographs and audio visual items, affirmative action, public relations and reference files on gifts and scholarships, athletics, student affairs, buildings and grounds, art, and commencement. The women in these collections appear as students, faculty and staff. Also included are some of the early Newcomb Archives, the records of the Tulane University Women's Association and videotapes of the Tulane Women's Basketball team from 1975.
Highlights: Records of the School of Social Work from the 1930s to the 1990s (approx. 300 linear feet). The School was the first Tulane college to have a woman dean. The archive has considerable research potential for women's studies, particularly in the areas of child-welfare and AIDs.
Finding aids: Paper inventories and card indexes are available in the reading room. Some inventories and all new finding aids are on the Division's web page.
Facilities: Photocopying, photography, microfilming and scanning; power sockets for laptops.
