Repository Information: The Tulane Manuscripts Department is a leading research archives for studying the society and culture of New Orleans, the state of Louisiana, and the Deep South. It began May 3, 1889, when a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to M. duPlantier of New Orleans was presented to the Charles T. Howard Memorial Library. In the years since that inaugural donation, the Manuscripts Department has grown to become one of New Orleans' more comprehensive research archives with over 2,000 collections encompassing over three linear miles of documents. Special emphasis is given to the social, cultural, political, literary, and military development of the region including women's studies, Jewish studies, Louisiana politics, the Civil War, waterways, medicine, social welfare, Carnival, and Southern literature.
Highlights: Papers of Congresswoman Lindy Boggs (1916-); papers of poet Catherine Brosman (1934-), the Tulane Carnival Collection; records of the Christian Women's Exchange; papers and designs of Newcomb artists Carmen Favrot, Miriam Levy, and others; papers of novelist Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970); records of the League of Women Voters; records of the Orleans Parish Medical Society Women's Auxiliary; records of the Poydras Home; papers of Martha Gilmore Robinson (1890-1957), New Orleans political and social activist; papers of Natalie Scott (1890-1957), journalist, author, and social activist; records of the Temple Sinai Sisterhood; and others.
