This collection pertains to the public activities and interests of Ethel Hutson, a New Orleans newspaper woman. It is divided into three major divisions: Women's Suffrage, Miscellaneous Civic Interests, and Lafcadio Hearn. The suffrage material is separated into correspondence, manuscripts, printed matter and news clippings. The second part, 1910-1957, relates to Ms. Hutson's civic interests which included education, public utilities, child welfare, the preservation of the St. Louis Hotel, public finance and transportation. The third part consists of material from 1932-1950 concerning Lafcadio Hearn, particularly the efforts of Dr. Rudolph Matas to publish Hearn's letter to him; the typescript of Hearn's letters to Matas; the typescript of "Some Friends of Lafcadio Hearn" by Ethel Hutson; typescript of an untitled article regarding the friendship of Lafcadio Hearn and Leona Queyrouze.
