1. Bass, Elizabeth
Collection on Women in Medicine
ca. 1890-1941
ca. 72 ft.
Pictures, letters, photographs, newspaper clippings, medical school catalogs, scrapbooks, bulletins, directories, lectures, addresses, and reports concerning experiences of women in the medical profession, their professional growth, and individual women physicians. The collection was created by Dr. Mary Elizabeth Bass (1876-1956), a 1904 graduate of the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, one of the first women physicians on the faculty of Tulane University School of Medicine and the first woman admitted to the Orleans Parish Medical Society.
Through her contacts and associations, she collected a vast array of materials pertaining to women in medicine. This collection consists of newspaper clippings, pictures, photographs, glass magic lantern slides, books, medical school catalogs, etc. There are approximately six filing cabinet drawers of clippings, pictures and photographs, eight shelves of books and catalogs, and four small boxes of glass magic lantern slides.
There is a 50-page guide to the collection that may be purchased for $10. Some of the materials in the collection are available through Interlibrary Loan, but most of the collection is restricted to in house use only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
