During each and every March, we at the Newcomb College Center for
Research on Women are bombarded with the question, "Why isn't there a
Men's History Month?" Now you'd think that the reason is that we live in
a patriarchal culture, but men could organize their own holiday if they
wanted to. That's the beauty of America. Yet, the underlying reasons for
the lack of "Straight White Male Day" are more complex. In the attempts
to answer the question, the 1997 NCCROW Summer Grant Project was
born.
Holidays have long been a time for reflection on the concept being
celebrated. Festivities bring these ideas out into a public forum
where discussion can (or cannot) happen. Holidays come in many forms. We
celebrate traditional holidays such as Christmas and Hannukah, as well as
governmental holidays such as Memorial Day. In the 1990's the
proliferation of holidays has reached phenomenal proportions. There is
truly a holiday for everyday. Check out our own compilation of holidays:
This project and site will hopefully guide you to a better understanding of the world of American Holidays and Celebrations.
