GBCH 718- Biochemical Genetics
Tuesday and Thursday: 1-3
Room 6301
Course Director: Arthur
J. Lustig, Ph.D.
This course emphasizes the critical analysis of manuscripts and solutions to experimental problems in molecular genetics, as well as a an reinforcement of some of the more advanced topics in geneitcs and molecular biology. There are four sections to this course: DNA Dynamics, DNA Replication, Transcriptional Control, and Higher Order Transcriptional and Post-Translational Control. One week prior to discussion of the papers (led by one of the students), students will be given the paper to be discussed on the Tuesday and Thursday of the subsequent week. The course instructor will act more as a facilitator than a didactic lecturer.
We will require that each student purchase An Introduction to Genetic Analysis, available in mid-December. The section dealing with the topic must be thoroughly read by the student prior to the Discussion groups.
Instructors of Section 1-Jan.16-Feb.8: Prescott Deininger, Ph.D., & Arthur Lustig, Ph.D.
Instructors of Section 2 (Feb.13-Mar.22): Jim Karam, Ph.D., Charles Miller, Ph.D. & Arthur Lustig, Ph.D.
Instructor of Section 3 (March 27-April 12): Michael Schurr, Ph.D. & Arthur J. Lustig, Ph.D.
Instructor of Section 4: (April 18- April 27): Mary Clancy, Ph.D.
1. Style
Individual and group--role as a facilitator--there is a course text which is An Introduction to Genetic Analysis and specific review articles-these are meant as background.
2. Grading
Based on individual performance in groups
Exams that ask students to analyze data--after
each section
