Tulane University LS-LAMP Academic Year Research Program

Program Description

This program involves academic-year research mentoring for minority undergraduates at Tulane. Former LS-LAMP faculty mentors may invite past LS-LAMP mentees to continue collaboration on their LS-LAMP research projects. Other faculty interested in serving as mentors in this program may select Tulane minority undergraduate students to participate in an ongoing research project. During the academic year, students will participate in all facets of research, write a research paper, and present a poster on their research results in a national scientific conference. Each LAMP Scholar will receive a $3,000 stipend, along with a travel supplement to present their research, for their involvement in the program. Students must be available to do research for both semesters. Faculty mentors will be encouraged to involve their mentees in these or other national or regional research conferences. We are hopeful that the collaboration will continue and possibly result in publication of the student's research project. The Tulane LS-LAMP Program can provide limited funds to help cover publication costs and costs associated with research lab materials.

The purpose of the LS-LAMP Program is to provide research opportunities to underrepresented minorities. Eligible groups are: African American, Hispanic, Alaskan Native, American Indian, and Pacific Islander. Students must be a U.S. citizens to participate.

Program Details: The Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-LAMP) Program at Tulane University is offering undergraduate research opportunities in the science, engineering, and mathematics fields for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Components: Faculty-mentored research; training in graduate research methods; and presentation of research results.

Stipend: $3000 plus travel supplement for research conducted during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Eligibility: Minority undergraduate students at Tulane pursuing a career in science, engineering, or mathematics, and who have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 are eligible to apply. Minority students are those who are classified as African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, or Pacific Islander.

Program Expectations: Participants are expected to perform research during both the Fall and Spring semesters.  Participants are required to actively perform research, write a research paper and present their results at a local, regional, or national conference.
