Industrial Arts
Though not
as much is known about the metal and needlework as is known of
the Pottery, below are examples of the other "industrial arts"
produced at Newcomb art school. Introduced in 1902 as a specialized
craft, textile was taught by Gertrude Roberts Smith. The needlework
designs are closely related to the pottery with clear, simple
patterns based on the environment. Jewelry was introduced in 1908-09
with the hiring of a former student, Mary Williams Butler, as
an Assistant Professor in Drawing and Design.
