PAINTINGS & SCULPTURE

The university's collection of paintings and sculpture includes a diverse array of subjects, artists, and styles. Portraiture is well represented with works by colonial-era painter José Francisco Salazar, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp, Kentucky artist William Edward West, and Ohio-born Herman Gustave Herkomer. Also in the collection are two notable landscapes including a depiction of New Orleans' bustling antebellum waterfront by French painter Hippolyte Sebron and a tranquil river scene by Barbizon artist Jean-Baptiste-Camile Corot. Allegorical works such as John Gadsby Chapman's rendering of two Old Testament heroines and Randolph Rogers' neo-classic American sculpture of Chateaubriand's star-crossed lovers are also held by the university. Sculptural works by Hiram Powers, Thomas Crawford, Paul Manship, and Angela Gregory are also represented.
