October 7 , 2009 I have decied to change things a bit and instead of discussing New Orleans' risk form present and future hurricanes today, we will discuss the lessons learned from the Hurricane Katrina Disaster and the steps that have been taken to reduce vulnerability.   Lecture notes in both html and PDF formats for this discussion are linked in the Lecture Notes section below.   Sorry for the late posting. 

September 17 , 2009 Today's Times-Picayune newspaper has a couple of articles of interest.  One is on the closing of the temporary gates on the London Avenue Canal - click HERE .  The other ariticle is about the disagreement between State and Local officials and Corps of Engineers concerning the permenant fix for the gates/pumps at the end of the drainage canals - click HERE.

August 27, 2009  I've added a list of books about the Katrina disaster in the Links section below. 

August 28, 2009   A article appeared today in the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper concerning deaths that occurred during Huricane Katrina.  You canget the article by clicking HERE.  You might want to print it out, along with map.  We won't discuss it at our next class meeting, but will discuss it a later meeting.
