December 19, 2007 - Final exam scores and course grades, along with some general comments about the final exam, are posted HERE.  Note that scores are only posted if you signed the permission slip on the next to last page of the exam.

December 7, 2007 -
REVIEW SESSION - The review session will take place on Wednesday, December 12 at 4:00 PM.  It will be held in Room 224 Mechanical Services Building (recently renamed the Science and Engineering Laboratory Building).  This room can be accessed from the second floor of Blessey Hall and the second floor of Stanley Thomas Hall.  Come prepared with all of your questions.

November 26, 2007 - There is one last field trip opportunity.  I have room for about 2 people on a field trip to the levee breaches on Friday, November 30.   The trip will begin at 8:00 AM.   If you still have not gone on the required field trip, this is your last chance.  Send me an email (snelson@tulane.edu) if you want to participate.

November 14, 2007 - The due date for homework VI on flooding has been changed to December 4 (from a previous date of November 29).  Please make a note of the new due date.

November 7, 2007 - In Homework 5, question 3 the link to the Washing Away graphic is not complete.  It should be http://www.nola.com/hurricane/content.ssf?/washingaway/goingunder.html The version of Homework 5 now posted on this site has the correct link.  If you downloaded or printed the homework assignment prior to today, you will have to either download/print the new version or use the link above to get to the graphic.

Another hint on this homework.  For Questions 2a and 2b, the most up to date information is not in the Frequently asked questions section of the NHC web site, but is in the section on "Most Extreme".

October 31, 2007 - The due date for Homework 5 on weather-related disasters has been changed to November 15 (from a previous date of November 13).  Please make a note of the new due date.

October 22, 2007 - The midterm exam has been graded and will be passed back in class on Tuesday, Oct. 22.   To see the distribution of scores, click HERE.

October 15, 2007 - For those of you did not attend one of the field trips scheduled for this course, there are two opportunities to go on a field trip coming up in the next few weeks.  One is on Saturday, October 20 at 8:30 AM, and the other is on Sunday, November 4 at 8:00 AM.  Space is limited on both trips.  Send Prof. Nelson an email if you want to reserve space on either trip.

September 30, 2007 - I have loaded a new version of the lecture notes on Volcanoes, Magmas, and Volcanic Eruptions.  If you downloaded these lecture notes prior to September 30, you will have to re download the notes to get the newest version.

August 30, 2007 - Be sure to sign up for a field trip to the levee breaches - click HERE for information on how to sign up and for further information on the field trip.

Lecture Notes

Note:  Two versions of each set of lecture notes are shown in the table below.  The first is in html format, optimized for viewing on the Web.  You can print this version directly from your Web browser, but there is no guarantee that the pages will break where they are supposed to, since each person's browser can be set up differently (margins, fonts, font sizes, etc.).

The PDF (Portable Document Format) versions of the lecture notes are optimized for printing.  All page breaks should occur correctly.  If your web browser has the proper plug-in installed, clicking on the PDF will bring the file into your web browser from which you can then print the notes.  If the plug-ins are not installed, your web browser will either attempt to download the PDF files or offer to send you to the Adobe web site to download the plug-ins for your browser.  If you choose to download the PDF format lecture notes you will still need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print the files.  This and further information about the browser plug-ins can be obtained by clicking on the icon below.

Note for Netscape Users - Netscape versions 6 and 7 do not display the symbol font used in many of these documents. If you don't see the following characters as Greek letters alpha and beta - a b , then your browser has this problem.  If you are using Netscape versions 6 or 7, either see the following web site to modify your Netscape Browser so that it displays the symbol font correctly

http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~osborne/MathTutorial/SYMFIX.HTM

or, view the PDF versions of the files which will always display all fonts correctly.
