Summer Intern

Every $2 you donate allows Gabe to provide an additional hour of service to the New Orleans community.

Gabe is about to be a Junior, Psychology major at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Hailing from Vestal, New York (or hick-town, as he likes to call it), he comes to New Orleans as a veteran of construction. Whether it was breaking his dad’s tools, or building some contraption that just got him hurt, building has been a big part of Gabe’s life. He’s spent countless hours volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and doing flood relief work in Broome County, New York. He is a member of Union’s all-male acappella group, “The Dutch Pipers”, and his favorite song is "MmmBop". The Big Easy, however, grabbed him for at least this summer. He plans to take the summer off from rugby, but keep on cycling, so don’t run him over.

His first experience in NOLA was on the sociology “Community Service Mini-term Abroad” from Union College. Professor Jan Grigsby and Dean Molly McElroy accompanied nineteen of Union’s finest to New Orleans in December. A week was spent in Mid-City doing rebuilding work, and then the group ventured to Dulac, LA, for a life changing experience. There was no way he was going to pass up the opportunity to come back to our great city over the summer. Gabe hopes to be a long term asset to SAFER (if we don’t drill him to the ceiling first), and spend a lot more time in New Orleans.
