Part I. F. 1.Presence or absence of series
Part I. F. 2.Different series

General notes

If there is any question about matching related to a series:  For new titles, OCLC and TULANET should be searched or re-searched -- both the bibliographic files and, when necessary, the authority files.  [Decision still to be made on adds searching].   Prefer a record in which everything, including any series or series-like phrase, matches your piece.

  1. Presence or absence of series

If there is no perfect match, but everything else matches, the presence or absence of a series or series-like phrase does not prevent a match.  This matching may apply when:

  2. Different series

If there is one series in the piece but a different series in a record, the record cannot be a match.  If there are slight variations between the series in the piece and in the record, and you are not certain whether the series are different, consult your trainer or the Authorities librarian.  (If there is a match, cf. Part II.D.3, on editing series variations.)

    E.g.            On piece:  Methuen theatrefile

In otherwise matching record:  Methuen new theatrescript

There are two different TULAF authority records, one for Methuen theatrefile, and one for
                Methuen new theatrescript.

This record is not a match, because the series are different.

E.g.      On piece:  Schirmer's edition of scores of orchestral works and chamber music no. 160

In otherwise matching record:  440   0  G. Schirmer's edition of scores of orchestral works and
                chamber music ; v no. 160

There is a TULAF authority record with a 130:  G. Schirmer's edition of scores of orchestral works
and chamber music.  The title lacking the initial "G." is listed as a 430 variant.

This record can be a match, because a minor variation in a single series is involved.

E.g.      On piece:  Collection Miroirs de l'art

In otherwise matching record:  490  0      Miroirs de l'art

This record can be a match, because a minor variation in a single series is involved.

If there is a variation in the presentation of the series number, such as the caption or prefix to a number (e.g., "Vintage K-3" vs. Vintage ; v V-3 or "11" vs. ... ; v 11th ser.), the item should be re-searched for a record with the same designation and everything else the same.  If no such record is found, the variation in itself does not prevent a match.
